As the death toll from High Pathogenic Avian Influenza surpasses 50 million, let’s take a look at the virus’ impact on the top turkey-producing state in the nation.
Minnesota produced more than 40 million birds last year alone, which comes out to about 1 billion pounds. They are third in the nation for HPAI cases, just shy of 4 million birds. It has seen the highest number of infected flocks, topping out at 105 so far.
These statistics mean turkey producers will be out nearly $120 million this year.
