Ag groups work to get young people interested in agriculture

According to the 2022 Census of Ag, the average age of U.S. farmers is just under 58., prompting many groups to get the next generation interested in agriculture.

Tony Saint James with All Ag News was recently in Texas for this year’s Cattle Raisers Convention & Expo and found one group looking to get a start on that process.

“We’ve seen a huge influx of young people in our association over the last few years –and we’ve worked at it, and we’ve worked hard,” said Jason Skaggs with the Texas Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. “I think there’s a really strong interest among our young people and our young leaders—whether you’re talking about high school, college age, young professionals—and [they’re] excited about the future and […] their ability to be in the industry.”

The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association recently started a foundation built around young people. They hope it can help support programs to get the younger generation interested in agriculture.
