Boar’s Head faces animal welfare challenge

The Animal Welfare Institute is challenging Boar’s Head on how it advertises the quality of care it gives its chickens and turkeys.

The Institute filed the complaint with the Federal Trade Commission claiming Boar’s Head only meets the minimum standards of animal care.

Boar’s Head’s website says it doesn’t raise the animals it uses for its lunch meats but does select suppliers supporting animal health and well-being.

AWI says this is the first challenge against an animal welfare claim on a meat product using the USDA label application.
