Boot Scootin’ Toward Better Health: UT Extension’s Line Dancing Program

UT Extension says line dancing offers a fun, full-body workout for all ages and experience levels.

Chester County, Tenn. (RFD News) — Getting healthy doesn’t always require a gym. University of Tennessee Extension is helping people stay active through fitness line dancing classes.

Instructor Anna Nelson with UT Extension says the classes are open to all experience levels and are designed to get people moving, not perfecting every step.

“It’s available to everybody, all experience levels. The thing that people get caught up in with line dancing is ‘Ah, I don’t know how to do it. I don’t know all the moves. I have no rhythm.’ It’s okay. The goal of this isn’t to become a professional. It’s just to have fun, move your body.”

Nineteen-year-old Steven Gibson, who first learned to line dance through 4-H, says dancing with a group makes exercise more enjoyable.

“It is cool and it’s just fun to do with like a big group. When you have a big group that’s physically active like that, it’s really fun to do together.”

UT Extension says the constant movement makes line dancing a great cardiovascular and full-body workout while also providing social interaction and a boost in mood.
