The dairy industry is seeing an increased demand for their products in grocery stores, which is helpful due to the decrease in demand from restaurants and schools. Peter Vitaliano, the VP of the National Milk Producers, says “We will see some longer-term increases at retail, but there’s no questioning that food service fallout is outweighing that.”
The effects from the coronavirus pandemic has lead some dairy farmers to either sale their milk to other markets at a reduce price or completely dump their product. Wisconsin dairy farmer Ryan Elbe says, “There’s a lot of pride that goes into producing milk these days, so the thought of just dumping it down the drain is very disheartening.”
