DES MOINES, IOWA (RFD NEWS) — As the growing season progresses, disease prevention is top of mind for farmers, with many looking at foliar fungicide applications as part of their crop management strategy this year.

Fred Nichols with HUMA joined us on Monday’s Market Day Report to provide guidance on fungicide application best practices and current trends in grower adoption.

In his interview with RFD News, Nichols discussed how commonly fungicide applications are being considered across the industry, referencing recent survey data showing strong interest among growers in multiple states.

He also addressed how disease pressure and changing economic conditions are influencing farmers’ decisions on whether and when to apply fungicides, noting that scrutiny around input costs has increased in recent seasons.

Nichols emphasized the importance of application timing, explaining that late or poorly timed sprays may reduce effectiveness because fungicide protection windows can be limited by conditions.

He also discussed product development and crop nutrition approaches to improve plant health and support disease resistance as part of integrated management strategies.
