Growing Strawberries in the Peach State

Strawberry operations are opening up across the US. Among them is a producer in the Peach State who is continuing a family tradition. With over half a billion dollars in ag produce every year, Colquitt County is Georgia’s top ag producer and home to many of its agri-businesses. That’s why it was such an honor for Trey Hart, owner and operator of Ochlockonee Ridge Farms, in Moultrie, GA, to win the county’s AgriBusiness Person of the Year.

Ochlockonee Ridge Farms is a diversified operation, maintaining a large herd of cattle, several row crops, and a very successful “you pick” business. Participation has been great this spring as the strawberries are red, juicy, and ready to pick. Trey sees one of the many benefits of this side of the operation as an opportunity to spread the story of agriculture to visitors, hoping that they are inspired to become more and more informed about the food production channel from farm to grocery store shelf.

Trey credits support and encouragement from his father and other family members (the “you pick” aspect of their farm was his sister’s idea) with inspiring him to continue in the family’s farming tradition.
