NASHVILLE, Tenn. (RFD News) — As heat builds across parts of farm country, BASF says a new canola hybrid could help growers manage extreme heat and drought.
BASF’s Albre Brown says InVigor Gold is designed to provide more consistent yields when growing conditions turn hotter and drier.
“And a farmer can anticipate a very predictable yield threshold. Even if you have a great year, then you can see a little bit more yield, but if you have a warmer, hotter, and drier year that might not be as favorable to traditional canola, that year will still support InVigor Gold, and you can expect consistent yield performance with this hybrid.”
Brown says the new hybrid also blooms earlier, helping protect against declining pollen viability as temperatures rise.
“The main thing that this protects against is that drop in pollen viability. For canola, as temperatures warm, pollen viability drops, so that earlier bloom timing, that earlier harvest timing for InVigor Gold canola allows that canola plant to maintain its yield and performance at harvest.”
Brown says growers can expect the drought-resistant seeds to become available before the next growing season.
