One of the nation’s largest cattle groups is asking the U.S. Trade Rep to investigate sheep imports, saying American producers now only hold 26 percent of the market share.
R-CALF tells Brownfield Ag News that in the last 30 years, the U.S. has lost 60 percent of commercial sheep operations and 62 percent of inventory.
CEO Bill Bullard says nearly three-quarters of the lamb eaten here in the U.S. is now raised abroad. He calls it a warning for the cattle industry, and he is asking the U.S. Trade Rep to investigate harm done by consumers in Australia and New Zealand.
