LINCOLN, Neb. (RFD News) — Rural communities continue to face barriers to health care, including access to eye and vision specialists.
University of Nebraska President Dr. Jeffrey Gold joined us on Friday’s Rural Health Matters to discuss the importance of routine eye care and when patients may need to see an ophthalmologist.
Gold said eye exams can reveal more than the need for glasses or contacts, including signs of vascular problems, diabetes and glaucoma. He said optometrists are more widely available in rural communities and can refer patients to an ophthalmologist when additional care is needed.
Gold also discussed macular degeneration and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to help prevent vision loss.
