Protests erupt in Taiwan over U.S. pork

Taiwan’s decision to allow imports of U.S. pork is getting some pushback.

The President of Taiwan made the announcement back in August, but now legislators from the opposition party stage a protest, throwing meat and starting fist fights in the House of Parliament this morning

The dispute is over ractopamine, which the U.S. uses to enhance leanness but the additive is banned in Europe and China.

Taiwan’s move to accept it was an effort to remove a roadblock, opening up the opportunity for a free trade agreement with the U.S.
