Researcher sees industrial hemp as a stress reducer for cattle

A Kansas State University Researcher may have a breakthrough in helping cattle reduce stress. In the research, they fed Holstein steers industrial hemp.

It contained a high amount of cannabinoids, which is considered the precursor to the CBD you might find in gummies. Prior to the hemp diet, the calves had been active.

According to Mike Kleinhenz, “We monitored how much time they spent laying around, amounts of steps they took in a day, and their overall general motion index, so how much activity they had moving left to right and things like that... The big finding is when we looked at their activity throughout the day, our industrial hemp calves spent a lot more time lying, and so that kind of shows us they’re just a little bit less stressful.”

He says that the diet also reduced cortisol levels, which is a stress hormone.
