Students are taste-testing grilled cheeses for National Grilled Cheese Day!

The state of Wisconsin does not need a special reason to celebrate dairy. However, one group recently held a promotion to honor National Grilled Cheese Day, and some students got a chance to try a new twist on one of the nation’s most popular sandwiches.

“We did this back in 2022 on National Grilled Cheese Day as well, where we partnered up with the schools in Durand (Wisconsin), and this year we also partnered with Pepin (County) schools, and we got cheese from Eau Galle cheese – it’s a mild cheddar - and Monterey Jack was the other one, so they put a slice of each on the grilled cheese sandwiches. It’s a much tastier grilled cheese sandwich than what they would normally get here with the government cheese on it. And then, instead of making the tomato soup with partial water and partial milk, it’s made with all milk today. We also brought the butter in for them to butter the sandwiches with,” said Randy Koeller.

Late last year, the U.S. House approved the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, which would expand milk options for schools. The bill is waiting for action in the Senate. Groups like the National Milk Producers Federation saying it is a common-sense solution to help ensure kids get the nutrition they need.
