Stock Show Spotlight: Dixie National Sale Sets New Records

Record auction prices accompany more than $1.4 million in scholarships for young exhibitors in Mississippi.

JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI (RFD NEWS) — The best in youth livestock showmanship was on display in Mississippi at the Dixie National Sale of Junior Champions.

This year’s event reached new highs at the auction block while continuing to invest in the future of agriculture.

The show has grown beyond a single day in the ring, serving as the culmination of a year’s worth of work for young exhibitors. More than 1,150 participants brought nearly 1,800 animals to compete for a coveted spot in the sale.

While records were broken, including a $13,500 lamb and a $25,000 goat, organizers say the impact stretches far beyond the auction totals. The event also awarded $1.4 million in scholarships.

Among those recognized was Julian Chavez, a homeschooled senior from Lincoln County, who earned the $2,500 Premier Exhibitor Scholarship. Chavez has been involved in 4-H for years and has held leadership roles within Mississippi 4-H.

Chavez has been raised by his grandparents since he was four years old and credits them for shaping his work ethic and determination.

“My grandmother has definitely been the driving force in making sure that I have been really good about my work ethic, but my grandfather, he’s the one who set the foundation.”

He adds that he tries to remain grounded through a personal philosophy centered on humility and faith.

While the Dixie National Sale of Junior Champions continues to raise millions for youth in agriculture, organizers say the real value isn’t found on the auction block.
