U.S. officials send a rebuttal to Mexico’s corn ban

Ag leaders, groups, lawmakers, and producers have long said Mexico’s decision was not based on science and the report minces no words.

U.S. ag officials are still pushing back on Mexico’s corn ban on genetically modified corn, releasing a more than 100-page rebuttal. Ag leaders, groups, lawmakers, and producers have long said Mexico’s decision was not based on science and the report minces no words.

It says, “Mexico has put forward no coherent theory or rationale for why GE corn would be unsafe in the face of science-based safety assessments, performed by competent authorities using an internationally-accepted approach.”

The USMCA dispute panel is scheduled to unveil its findings next month, with the public release slated for July 5th.

On the dairy side, the relationship with Mexico is much better. Industry leaders from both Mexico and the United States met this week to talk about mutual dairy policies. Some of the issues surround trade, increasing consumption, and information sharing in both markets. According to Greg Doud, President of the National Milk Producers Federation, the recently signed commitment will bolster the ties between the two nations.
