Line speed trials at swine plants are set to continue for roughly another year.
The extension will now also include a study to better understand the impact of those speed increases on worker safety. Last year, the Food Safety and Inspection Service allowed a 90-day extension to design the study which will go until January of 2025. The National Pork Producers Council applauds the move and says it gives the industry a level of certainty in an uncertain time. They say a loss in line speed would cost producers roughly $10 per head.
The new study will include on-site visits, interviews, and observations at increased speeds.
