LUBBOCK, Texas (RFD News) — USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service is nearing a new way for farmers to retrieve agricultural data by typing or speaking a question. Administrator Joe Parsons says the agency is close to offering that capability as part of a broader modernization effort.
Parsons says the goal is to make official statistics easier to find and use on mobile devices. Farmers may be in a tractor, pickup or combine and need quick access to specific information without searching lengthy reports.
The agency is building on its Ag Insights platform, which allows users to filter data and view charts online. Parsons says most NASS reports moving forward will be available through that format instead of relying only on static PDF files.
NASS is moving carefully because some USDA statistics can influence agricultural markets. Parsons says the agency must protect the accuracy and reliability of official data while improving access.
Additional tools are also in development, including better use of social media and partnerships with state agriculture departments. NASS plans to keep refining Ag Insights based on producer and agribusiness feedback.
