A South Dakota company is in the lab working on a two-dose vaccine for HPAI

A South Dakota company is working to speed up vaccine development for High Pathogenic Avian Influenza as the current outbreak has dragged on for more than a year.

MedGene Labs creates animal health vaccines focused on emerging diseases. Researchers are making a two-dose vaccine aimed at attacking different strains of avian flu, and they are using technology already approved by USDA for hog and cattle.

They will study the vaccine for six weeks while they see how turkeys respond to treatment. Chicken response will be next, but the company warns farmers should not expect a roll-out anytime soon due to international export issues.
