ASA President: USMCA Extension Is Critical for U.S. Soybean Exports

ASA President Scott Metzger says soybean growers remain focused on trade, the Farm Bill, renewable fuels, and market stability as Congress weighs additional assistance for farmers and export opportunities.

WILLIAMSPORT, Ohio (RFD NEWS) — Soybean growers continue balancing production challenges, export opportunities and policy priorities as the growing season progresses.

American Soybean Association (ASA) President Scott Metzger joined us on Friday’s Market Day Report following the organization’s board meeting to discuss the key issues facing producers.

In his interview with RFD News, Metzger said board members spent significant time discussing input costs and the continued need for a new farm bill. While growers remain hopeful that Congress will act, he acknowledged that the timeline for passage becomes more challenging as the year progresses.

Exports were also a major focus during the meeting. Metzger emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, noting Mexico remains one of the top buyers of U.S. soybeans. He said extending the agreement would provide important stability for soybean producers and the broader agricultural economy.

China also remains a key export market. Metzger said producers are encouraged by recent soybean purchase commitments, though they remain cautious until additional sales are finalized and shipments begin moving.

On the renewable fuels front, Metzger highlighted recent progress in California, where changes related to feedstock supply chain requirements could provide additional certainty for soybean producers supplying the renewable fuels market.

Metzger also welcomed movement on a House budget resolution that could provide up to $12 billion in additional farmer assistance. While he said growers would prefer stronger export markets over government support, he noted additional aid could help producers manage financial pressures while trade opportunities continue to develop.

On his own Ohio farm, Metzger said planting was completed early this season and crop conditions have been favorable so far, leaving him optimistic about the current growing season.
