APPLETON, Wisc. (RFD NEWS) — Producers are increasingly evaluating conservation practices not only for soil health benefits but also for emerging carbon revenue opportunities as agricultural carbon markets continue to evolve.
John Crispin with Agoro Carbon Alliance joined us on Wednesday’s Market Day Report to discuss the state of carbon programs and how producer participation and expectations have shifted in recent years.
In his interview with RFD News, Crispin reflected on the early days of carbon program development, noting that farmer questions have evolved significantly since the company launched in 2021, particularly as more producers gain firsthand experience with enrollment and payments.
He discussed lessons learned from enrolling more than 2.5 million acres and distributing over $30 million to producers, highlighting what farmers prioritize in successful carbon programs.
Crispin also addressed the growing emphasis on measurement, reporting, and verification within carbon markets, explaining why scientific rigor is becoming increasingly important for credibility and long-term market stability.
He further discussed the opportunities and challenges facing agricultural carbon markets over the next five years as programs continue to mature and expand.
Crispin highlighted where he sees the greatest opportunity for farmers and ranchers, noting that participation in evolving carbon programs could become an increasingly important component of farm income diversification.
