JONESBORO, Ark. (RFD News) — Farmers in northeast Arkansas are growing genetically modified corn that GreenLab says can produce a natural sweetener more than 2,000 times sweeter than table sugar.
The company says the corn produces brazzein, a naturally occurring sweet protein that recently received FDA “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS) status.
GreenLab says expanding production could create a higher-value market for corn growers as demand for natural sweeteners grows.
According to USDA, Americans consume about 17 teaspoons of added sugar each day, well above dietary recommendations.
