From Sea Monkeys to Global Exports: Let’s dive into Utah’s fascinating Great Salt Lake Brine Shrimp Co-Op!

Ever wonder about the tiny creatures known as sea monkeys? Dive into the fascinating world of brine shrimp at the Great Salt Lake Brine Shrimp Co-Op in Utah.

At the Great Salt Lake Brine Shrimp Co-op in Utah, lively brine shrimp, often referred to as sea monkeys, are harvested for various purposes, primarily as fish food.

Once harvested, dried, and processed, these brine shrimp are exported worldwide to feed fish and shrimp in aquariums and aquaculture farms. The cooperative, formed by multiple companies harvesting on the lake, has united them to enhance marketing power and ensure sustainability practices. Brine shrimp eggs, the main product harvested, are exported to 55 countries and are also used in scientific research due to their easy to produce populations.

The cooperative works closely with regulators to impose voluntary restrictions to maintain the sustainability of the Great Salt Lake’s brine shrimp population, benefiting not only the industry but also the migratory birds relying on the lake as a food resource during their annual migrations.

Despite the unique nature of the industry, those involved find it both enjoyable and fulfilling, playing a vital role in feeding the world. With a significant portion of the global supply originating from the Great Salt Lake Brine Shrimp Co-op, it underscores the industry’s scale and importance in global aquaculture.
