New case of BSE will halt Brazilian beef exports to China

Beef exports from Brazil to China will be on hold starting today after a confirmed case of atypical Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, or BSE.

Brazil’s Ag Ministry says it was an isolated case and no other animals in the herd were affected. The suspension of exports is part of an animal health pact between the two countries but officials say this current pause is only expected to be temporary.

It comes as a blow to Brazilian farmers since China is the main market for the country’s beef exports.

The last time Brazil reported an atypical case of BSE was in 2021.
