Preparation & Prevention: The pork industry is honing in on African Swine Fever this year

African Swine Fever continues to be a major focus in the new year for the pork industry.

The industry is particularly centered on prevention and detection. The disease was first found in China several years ago, and since then, the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has strengthened its partnerships with Customs and Border Protection staff at ports of entry.

The Director of the Swine Health Information Center tells Brownfield Ag News the level of preparedness is unprecedented, saying, “We’re at a state now with African swine fever that in my career we’ve never been at this level of prevention, response, and recovery that we’ve been with any other foreign animal disease.”
