Special Olympic athletes took center stage this past weekend at the Iowa State Fair’s Bacon Buddies show.
With the help of FFA and 4-H students, the athletes showcased their pigs in the Swine Barn during one of the Fair’s most heartwarming events. In its seventh year, Bacon Buddies is a partnership between Special Olympics Iowa and Iowa Pork Producers Association. It pairs those with disabilities with FFA and 4-H youth, according to the Iowa Pork Producers Association.
John Kliegl, president and CEO of Special Olympics Iowa says it goes beyond the ring.
“Thanks to the incredible partnership and vision of the Iowa Pork Producers Association, Special Olympics Iowa athletes have the opportunity to step into the show ring, build confidence, develop new skills, and create meaningful friendships with Iowa’s 4-H and FFA youth. These moments extend far beyond the fairgrounds. They change perceptions of individuals with intellectual disabilities, strengthen communities, and remind all of us that everyone deserves the chance to shine.”
Nearly 50 county fairs hosted Bacon Buddies shows.
