Tennessee 4-H Camp Blends Outdoor Learning and Leadership

The Outdoor Wildlife Leadership School combines outdoor recreation with service projects that benefit local wildlife.

STEWART COUNTY, Tenn. (RFD News) — Tennessee 4-H members are spending time outdoors while building leadership skills at the annual Outdoor Wildlife Leadership School (OWLS) Camp at Land Between the Lakes.

Service is a key part of the camp, with participants completing projects that benefit wildlife and the surrounding area.

“Around 70 or 80 bird feeders will be hung up here in LBL and provide some food for wildlife,” said Hope Simons with UT Extension. “In years past, we’ve built bird boxes. We’ve planted pollinator gardens. I know several years ago, we made some artificial homes for fish out here in the lake, and that’s on our list to do again in the future.”

Organizers say the camp gives young people the opportunity to connect with nature while developing leadership skills through outdoor experiences and conservation projects.
