MEMPHIS, TENN. (RFD News) — Time and rising grocery costs are shaping how families think about meals, and 4-H students are learning how to make the most of what’s available. Fayette County 4-H students put those skills to the test at the Midsouth Farm & Gin Show, a cooking competition focused on creativity and practical cooking.
Teams were challenged to prepare a meal using pantry items while incorporating a mystery ingredient. The teams also came up with unique dish names and dressed in themed uniforms as part of the competition. 4-H agents served as judges, evaluating each team’s ability to create and present a finished dish.
Participant Eric Farmer says the competition is exciting and that the experience is beneficial.
“I like competitions. I really like cooking and to use my hands,” Farmer said. “It’s a skill that you can use for the rest of your life.”
The event drew a record number of participants this year, with teams from Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Missouri.
A total of 18 teams competed in the day-long contest, with the “Culinary Clovers” from Arkansas 4-H taking home the top prize.
