Farm Bill Proposal Targets Food Aid Program Changes

The proposal would shift Food for Peace and McGovern-Dole from the State Department to USDA.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (RFD News) — Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman says moving two international food aid programs to USDA remains a priority as lawmakers continue working on the farm bill.

Boozman wants to transfer the Food for Peace and McGovern-Dole programs from the State Department to USDA, saying the department is better suited to oversee agriculture and crop related programs.

“That seems to be a much better fit, in the sense that, who knows better about agriculture and crops than USDA, as opposed to State. We aren’t the committee of jurisdiction, we’re trying to get it moved into our committee. When you have committees that lose jurisdiction, sometimes that’s a little bit of a problem. The plan is for it to be in this legislation if we can come to an agreement. I feel like we’re heading in that direction.”

Boozman said the Food for Peace program was created not only to fight global hunger, but also to provide additional markets and support for American farmers.
