The largest wildfire in Texas history is now five times the size of New York City and there’s no end in sight for the agriculture industry.
The Smokehouse Creek Fire broke out last Monday and has now burned more than one million acres. Texas Ag Commissioner, Sid Miller, says grain bins are being destroyed and they’ve likely lost tens of thousands of livestock. On top of the deaths, there will be lasting repercussions for herd rebuild, traumatized cattle and of course, burned pastures.
The cattle business in the Lone Star state is worth more than $15 billion, making it the most profitable ag commodity in the state, and the Smokehouse Creek Fire is only 15% contained at this time.
