Higher Input Costs Weigh on Canadian Farmers

Growers are reevaluating fertilizer strategies as they plan for the 2027 crop.

ALBERTA, Canada (RFD-TV) — As farmers work to complete the fall harvest, input costs remain a major concern.

RealAg Radio host Shaun Haney joined us on Thursday’s Market Day Report to discuss the impact of higher diesel prices and how growers are approaching fertilizer decisions for 2027.

In his conversation with RFD-TV, Haney says rising diesel prices are putting pressure on farms, with higher fuel surcharges also affecting railway freight.

On fertilizer, growers are also reevaluating their approach. Haney says some are increasing soil testing and considering changes to fertilizer applications and crop rotations to control costs.

As for additional assistance, Haney says he is not hearing about a Canadian program similar to the farm aid announced in the U.S. this week. Instead, the federal government is pointing producers toward existing business risk management programs.
