VERMILION PARISH, La. (This Week in Louisiana Agriculture) — Louisiana rice harvest is picking up as weather conditions allow combines to move through fields, but lower prices and rising production costs are making it difficult for farmers to turn a profit.
Louisiana is the nation’s third-largest rice-producing state, with roughly 480,000 acres grown across 29 farming regions. However, farmers say yields have been mixed this season, adding to the financial pressure.
To help offset those costs, some producers are looking for ways to reduce expenses without sacrificing crop quality. High fertilizer prices also remain one of the biggest challenges, with costs nearing $750 per ton.
