WASHINGTON, D.C. (RFD News) — USDA says its latest sterile fly facility in Texas is expected to open by spring as efforts continue to combat New World screwworm.
The facility is expected to produce 100 million sterile flies per week by the end of next year, increasing to as many as 300 million per week by 2028. Researchers believe about 500 million sterile flies per week are needed to push screwworm populations south toward the Darién Gap.
USDA and the Department of Homeland Security are also planning to use drones, artificial intelligence and real-time data as part of the response.
The FDA has also issued emergency use authorization for Simparica Trio to treat New World screwworm in dogs. While most dogs in the U.S. are at low risk of exposure, infestations have been reported. The medication comes in a chewable tablet.
