Tennessee Leadership Summit Cultivates Future Ag Leaders

High school students are exploring agriculture, leadership and future careers through the Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation program.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (RFD News) — Tennessee high school students are learning about agriculture and the role leadership plays in the industry and in their own development.

The students attended the Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation’s Tennessee Leadership Summit, a partnership with the University of Tennessee’s Herbert College of Agriculture.

For Zykeia Harwell, the summit has changed the way she views leadership.

“Growing up, I thought leadership is not what I thought it actually is, and I’m learning a lot of about the characteristics of that.”

Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation President Eric Mayberry said the program helps students grow both personally and professionally.

“The leadership skills that these young folks learn in something like this, to get a week away from home and get in a different environment, it’s just great to see them go from Monday to Friday. You can see the difference.”

The leadership summit is scheduled to remain at the Herbert College of Agriculture for at least the next two years, and students attending the program can also earn future college credit.
