Women in Ag Spotlight: UNL Student Visits Washington, D.C., to Learn How Lawmakers Shape Agriculture Policy

UNL student fellow Alison Walbrecht shares her perspective on building support for agricultural research, extension, and teaching while gaining hands-on insight into federal policymaking.

LINCOLN, NEBRASKA (RFD NEWS) — Many of the policies affecting farmers are shaped in the nation’s capital, and one University of Nebraska–Lincoln student recently had the chance to see that process firsthand.

UNL Senior Alison Walbrecht joined us on Tuesday’s Market Day Report to recap her visit to Washington, D.C., where she met with lawmakers to discuss the importance of investing in agriculture. The trip was part of the CARET Program (Council for Agricultural Research, Extension, and Teaching), which helps build support for teaching programs that serve rural communities.

In her conversation with RFD NEWS, Walbrecht, also a Yeutter Student Fellow Program, explained how her experience connected with her studies and her preparation for a career in agricultural policy. She also shared key takeaways from the trip, including the value of engaging directly with lawmakers and understanding the policy process that shapes the future of farming.

Finally, Walbrecht encouraged other agriculture students to explore similar opportunities to learn about agricultural policy, network with industry leaders, and see how advocacy and education intersect in Washington.
