UT Extension celebrates 25 years of support for Tennessee farmers through the Center for Profitable Ag

For a quarter-century now, the University of Tennessee Extension’s Center for Profitable Agriculture has been empowering farmers, encouraging innovation, and growing a stronger agricultural future for the state through their vital industry support.

In 1998, recognizing the need for support in Tennessee’s agricultural landscape, UT Extension created the Agriculture Development Center. The vision was clear – to provide resources that would empower farming operations, helping them expand existing ventures and venture into new avenues. Over the years, the center has evolved, now known as the Center for Profitable Agriculture, relocating to Spring Hill in 2002 through a partnership with the Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation.

The Center envisions a future where farmers collaborate and develop partnerships, moving closer to consumers in the food chain. By transforming raw products into value-added goods, they aim to enhance profitability for Tennessee farmers. The mission is anchored in providing tools and resources that empower farm families to succeed, contributing to the growth and strength of Tennessee agriculture.

The Center started with a focus on providing educational information and assistance to farm families considering or developing a value-added enterprise. For 25 years, it has been a hub for coordinating ideas and turning them into profitable actions. The Center’s dedication to education remains unwavering, defining the programs offered across the state.

Agricultural Evolution: Reflecting on the agricultural landscape 25 years ago, Tennessee was synonymous with traditional agriculture – row crops, beef cattle, hogs, and dairy. Today, the Center witnesses a remarkable diversification and creativity in agriculture, opening up profitable opportunities for farmers. From agri-tourism to new production methods, Tennessee’s agriculture has transformed, with the Center at the forefront of this evolution.
