CALGARY, ALBERTA (RFD NEWS) — Debate is growing within Canadian agriculture over the potential benefits and drawbacks of a trade agreement between Canada and the Mercosur trade bloc, with fertilizer and cattle interests taking notably different positions on the issue.

Shaun Haney, host of RealAg Radio, joined us on Tuesday’s Market Day Report to discuss why various sectors of agriculture are viewing the proposed agreement through different lenses.

In his interview with RFD News, Haney discussed the differing perspectives between Canada’s fertilizer industry and cattle sector, highlighting how each industry sees distinct opportunities and challenges tied to expanded trade with Mercosur countries in South America.

He also addressed Brazil’s importance to Canadian agriculture, particularly as a major market for potash producers and other agricultural interests seeking expanded export opportunities.

Haney noted that the negotiations illustrate how agricultural trade policy can sometimes create differing priorities within the farm sector, with individual commodities evaluating agreements based on their own market interests and competitive concerns.

Finally, he previewed topics listeners can expect to hear on RealAg Radio this week as discussions surrounding trade, market access, and agricultural policy continue to evolve.
