Farm Rescue: While a Minnesota farmer with West Nile fought for his life, his family also needed a lifeline

The Vick Family’s battle with West Nile Virus and the helping hand of Farm Rescue.

Agriculturalists like the Vick Family invest an immense amount of effort and planning into their operations—especially as the harvest season approaches. It is typically the time to reap the rewards of their hard work the rest of the year, promising a hope of turning that dedicated effort into a profitable venture. However, when unforeseen challenges—like a debilitating illness striking a key member of the farming team — the consequences can be devastating.

The Vick Family of Raymond, Minnesota, faced such a challenge last fall. It was around harvest time when Doug Vick began suffering from extreme fatigue and balance issues. Little did they know, he would eventually be diagnosed with West Nile Virus.

With the uncertainty of Doug’s recovery and the imminent start of the harvest season, Doug’s brother, Darrell Vick, turned to Farm Rescue for assistance. He shared the family’s journey in a recent interview.

According to Darrell, Doug’s condition deteriorated rapidly. He ended up in the intensive care unit of a regional medical center. His diagnosis of West Nile Virus came as a shock. As he fought for his life, the family faced the daunting task of managing their crops without his vital contributions and leadership.

Thankfully, that is when Farm Rescue, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting farmers during crises, stepped in to help. Volunteers and equipment arrived promptly, lending the family an indispensable helping hand with harvesting their corn and soybean crops.

Darrell expressed his gratitude for the assistance provided by Farm Rescue, highlighting how it relieved immense pressure from his family during a trying time.

In times of crisis, unity prevails—and during this time, the Vick Family experienced the warmth of community outreach. Darrell acknowledged the willingness of neighbors to assist as well as the support they received from the farming community. However, he was also grateful that the support from Farm Rescue reduced the burden on their friends and neighboring farmers, giving them a chance to focus on their own crops during the critical harvest time and offer their help to the Vick Family when needed.

Darrell extends his heartfelt thanks to Farm Rescue’s volunteers and supporters for their invaluable assistance during a challenging period. He expressed his intention to spread the word about Farm Rescue’s impact work.
