Fourth of July Travel Fuels E15 Push

Biofuel leaders say the holiday travel season highlights the need for permanent year-round E15 access

WASHINGTON, D.C. (RFD News) — More than 60 million Americans are expected to travel over the Fourth of July holiday, and biofuel advocates say E15 can help drivers save at the pump.

Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor says E15 continues to offer drivers another fuel option heading into the holiday weekend.

“Ethanol producers, farmers, and retailers are proud to celebrate the holiday by holding down fuel prices for Fourth of July travelers. Despite arbitrary federal restrictions, E15 is used by millions of American drivers, approved for more than 96 percent of cars on the road, and offered at thousands of fuel stations across the country.”

Nebraska Farm Bureau’s Jordan Dux says lawmakers still need to pass legislation allowing year-round E15 sales without relying on temporary federal waivers.

“Our message around the office is that it really shouldn’t be this hard, but unfortunately it has been. And so trying to get that bill across the finish line. There are two pieces to it. There’s trying to fix the administrative side, which would allow for sales of E15 year round without this government waiver that we’ve been working under for the past few years. And then you also have some reforms when it comes to some small refinery exemptions. That’s the sticking part. That’s the part that’s been difficult.”

The legislation currently remains before the Senate, where agricultural leaders say it will likely need to be attached to a larger bill before receiving a floor vote later this year.
