Idaho Farm Bureau’s 2023 Excellence Awardees forge a harmonious family life built on a passion for ranching

Meet the Andrus who believe that hard work is one of the best starts to a successful life. Together, they work at his family ranch and started their own ranching operation.

Idaho’s Kevin and Shelby Andress, along with their six children—Lindy, Bronson, Tate, Emma, Boyd, and Ron— are cultivating a haven of love and resilience on their family Idaho ranch. This dynamic couple, winners of the Idaho Farm Bureau’s 2023 Excellence Award, exemplifies the enduring power of love in the face of life’s challenges.

For the Andress family, agriculture is not merely a livelihood — it is a way of life. The ranch, proudly owned and operated since 1959, stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment. Cattle, horse breeding, and training are integral threads woven into the rich tapestry of their family’s identity. Recognized as this year’s Idaho Excellence Winners, the Andress family epitomizes the enduring spirit and resilience of farming life.

Shelby’s journey to the ranch was anything but conventional. Navigating the complexities of single motherhood with two children, a serendipitous encounter with a terminally ill neighbor altered the course of her life. Encouraged to pursue education and personal growth, Shelby found herself in a small Idaho town, attending a religion class that would unexpectedly lead her to meet her husband, Kevin.

Their story unfolds amid life’s biggest uncertainties. What began as a casual date evolved into a profound connection that transcended circumstances. Marriage, the arrival of twins, and the recent birth of their youngest son, Ron, have continued to solidify their bond and showcase the resilience of their love.

The Andress Ranch, steeped in family history, became the canvas for their shared dreams. Kevin, who was raised on the same ranch, seamlessly transitioned into marriage and fatherhood. Also serving as a state legislator for five years, he brought his dedication to community service into their shared journey.

While their “normal’ might differ from others, the Andress Family wholeheartedly embraces the unique rhythm of their family life. They cherish a deep connection to the Earth and have a profound appreciation for its agricultural bounties—and work hard to instill these values in their children as the cornerstone of their distinctive way of life.
