LINCOLN, Neb. (RFD News) — Consumer concern is growing over the Cyclospora outbreak as health officials work to better understand the source of the parasite.
University of Nebraska President Dr. Jeffrey Gold joined us on Wednesday’s Rural Health Matters to discuss the latest developments.
In his conversation with RFD News, Gold said Cyclospora infects the small intestine and can cause severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, cramping and dehydration. He said washing fruits and vegetables is an important step in reducing the risk of infection, though it is not completely effective.
Gold also encouraged anyone experiencing symptoms to seek medical care, saying testing can help health officials identify cases and trace the source of the outbreak.
