WASHINGTON, D.C. (RFD News) — Additional tariffs against Canada have been paused as trade talks continue under the USMCA.
Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley said President Trump is using tariffs as a bargaining chip in the negotiations. He said the trade agreement is crucial for American agriculture, but some issues still need to be addressed.
“As we work to renew the USMCA, it’s critical that we address outstanding issues. The United States must ensure Canada lives up to its commitments under the agreement, such as taking more of our dairy products. You’ve heard me talk about that for the last six years of the USMCA. I’m in favor of tough negotiations so American farmers get the best deal.”
President Trump paused the additional tariffs against Canada for at least three days this week, saying a deal with the country is near.
U.S. sugar producers are also calling for changes to tariffs, saying over-quota rates on imported sugar are too low and have not been addressed since they were set in 2000. They say the rates are not high enough to effectively limit imports, while the U.S. entered the year with its highest sugar stocks on record.
Deputy USDA Secretary Stephen Vaden recently told growers the administration will not allow unfair foreign competition to stand.
