Crop Tour Finds Corn Falling Short of Expectations

Lower plant populations have been a common theme across the eastern leg.

PAWNEE, Ill. (RFD News) — The Pro Farmer Crop Tour is continuing across the Corn Belt, with scouts getting a firsthand look at this year’s corn crop.

Oliver Sloup with Blue Line Futures joined us on Wednesday’s Market Day Report from the eastern leg of the tour to discuss what scouts are seeing.

In his conversation with RFD News, Sloup described the crop as “middle of the road,” with results so far falling short of expectations. Indiana came in at 183.54 bushels per acre, about 10 bushels below last year and 2% below the three-year average.

In Illinois, early samples were running near or slightly below the five-year average of 195 to 200 bushels per acre for the districts being surveyed.

Sloup said lower plant populations have been a common theme, potentially reflecting wet conditions earlier in the growing season.
