Tennessee Junior Beef Expo Steers Help Feed Families in Need

Nearly 3,000 pounds of beef was donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (RFD News) — Nearly 3,000 pounds of beef from winning steers at the Tennessee State Junior Beef Expo has been donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.

Taylor Kaufman with the Tennessee Cattlemen’s Association joined us on Thursday’s Market Day Report alongside expo champions Lucas Berner and Michael Barnett to discuss the program and their involvement in agriculture.

Kaufman said the initiative gives young people an opportunity to support families in need while participating in the cattle industry. She said the association also offers educational and scholarship programs for youth interested in agriculture, including those who do not show cattle.

Berner, who exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer, said he has been involved with livestock since fourth grade and has shown cattle across Tennessee. Barnett exhibited the Grand Champion Market Steer and described the work that went into preparing the animal for competition.

Both said knowing the beef from their steers would help feed families in their community made the experience especially meaningful.
