NASHVILLE, Tenn. (RFD News) — More than 300 million acres of U.S. farmland are expected to change hands over the next two decades as current landowners retire, making farm succession planning an increasingly important issue.
Brooks Lamb with American Farmland Trust joined us on Wednesday’s Market Day Report to discuss the challenges families face when transferring farmland from one generation to the next. He said financial, legal and family dynamics often make those conversations difficult, causing many producers to delay planning.
Lamb said American Farmland Trust helps farmers through one-on-one assistance, educational resources and a network of land transfer navigators who work with families throughout the succession planning process.
He also highlighted the organization’s Landed podcast, which shares stories from farmers and ranchers across the country while encouraging more families to begin planning for the future.
