BOONE, Iowa (RFD News) — Researchers and soybean growers are exploring a new use for soybean oil by incorporating it into asphalt for roads.
The Iowa Soybean Association, United Soybean Board and Iowa State University have partnered to develop soy based asphalt as a more sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum based paving materials. Early research suggests it may improve pavement performance while creating new demand for soybeans.
Researchers say more than 1 million acres of high oleic soybeans are already grown in the United States, supplying the specialized oil used in soy based asphalt and other industrial products.
