Produce industry pushes back on EU’s proposed plastic packaging ban

The European Parliament has approved a proposed law to ban plastic packaging and produce groups are pushing back.

Fresh produce growers and exporters say the new rules will greatly affect food safety and waste and call for some policies to be scaled back. If the regulations receive final formal approval from EU countries, all plastic packaging will be done away with by 2030.

Similar restrictions are under consideration in Canada. The U.S. produce industry says this would make it virtually impossible to transport some foods including raspberries and bagged lettuces.
