FORT STOCKTON, Texas (RFD News) — New World screwworm remains a concern as several states continue restricting cattle imports from Texas.
Warren Cude, a member of the governor’s New World Screwworm Task Force, joined us on Thursday’s Market Day Report to discuss the latest eradication efforts.
In his interview with RFD News, Cude said USDA and the Texas Animal Health Commission have spent the past 18 months preparing for the pest’s arrival. He said sterile fly releases have helped slow the spread of New World screwworm into Texas, while new technology is improving eradication efforts.
Cude also said producers who report suspected cases and follow inspection protocols have been able to quickly resume moving livestock despite import restrictions.
He encouraged livestock owners to closely monitor their animals and report any suspected cases, saying early detection remains one of the most important tools in stopping the pest’s spread.
