OLYMPIA, Wash. (RFD News) — Farmers in the Pacific Northwest say rising costs are putting increasing pressure on their operations, with Washington ranking 50th in farm profitability.
Michelle Hennings with the Washington Association of Wheat Growers said educating lawmakers about the challenges facing producers has become increasingly important.
“This isn’t sustainable for very long, and so there are just a lot of different costs coming in every way. We recently just held an ag tour with state legislators, and we talked about various issues that are going on, like our labor and the gas prices, all these things that hit farmers at once in their bottom line and have caused this spiral for farming.”
Hennings said many growers she has spoken with are nervous about what lies ahead. She said the current break-even price for wheat is $7.71.
