PIERRE, S.D. (RFD News) — Bees are critical pollinators, but wasps can also play an important role.
South Dakota State University Extension entomologist Amanda Bachmann said wasps often get a bad reputation because people fear their more aggressive behavior.
“I’m team all the insects, but I feel like wasps really get a bad rap because people do get very afraid of them because they can be sort of more aggressive than our other stinging insects. Really the thing with wasps and sort of all the other critters out there is don’t freak out, like don’t flail around, don’t wave your arms, like stay calm because realistically a lot of these insects are much more concerned with visiting a flower, you know, finding that pollen or nectar. We’re big and scary to them, like they don’t want to interact with us.”
Bachmann said, like other insects, wasps generally just want to be left alone.
