WASHINGTON, D.C. (RFD-TV) — Federal efforts are underway to improve the nation’s food system through a greater focus on nutrition education.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, says the agency is working to educate communities on the importance of food as medicine.
“We are also asking for institutions and states to pledge to teach their medical students and nurses about nutrition. Because here’s a little unfortunate, but very real finding. If you don’t teach doctors and nurses things in schooling, they don’t think it’s important. Believe it or not, I ran for president of my student body in med school on that campaign pledge. We bring nutrition into the classroom. It’s that important.”
Oz says improving nutrition education and encouraging healthier food choices are key ways to prevent chronic disease.
